The Battle of Jiangxia is Sun Quan’s campaign against Huang Zu, in which a family grievance becomes a military objective and a battlefield victory opens onto new strategic danger. The capture of Xiakou drives Huang Zu into flight; Gan Ning pursues and kills him, then presents his head to Sun Quan, who has it offered at Sun Jian’s tomb. The act answers an old debt, but the campaign does not end the pressure on Sun Quan’s position: retaliation from Liu Biao and the prospect of an attack by Cao Cao remain.
